•What is UN?
The United Nations (UN) is the largest intergovernmental organization that is in charge of international peace and security, developing friendly relations in association with nations. The main purposes of the UN are maintaining international peace and security, protecting human rights, delivering humanitarian aid, promoting sustainable development, and upholding international law. The UN has been tackling the global issues for 74 years with its 153 member states.
•What is MUN?
MUN (Model United Nations) is an academic simulation of the mechanism of the actual United Nations. Delegates are expected to roleplay their assigned countries or historical figures, their job is to express themselves and stand behind the arguments their countries are defending.
There are a bunch of committees that are different in subject matters. For example; while the Security Council is dealing with completely different matters such as international disputes the General Assemblies are dealing with problems like famine or migration. There are also special committees like JCC (Joint Crisis Committee) that the delegates are given a crisis on that moment. The committee can be on a specific timeline such as The Turkish War of Independence or The Spanish Civil War Delegates are expected to solve these problems by communicating with each other and coming to a conclusion. At the end of each conference delegates are given certificates and prizes like the Best Delegate.
•The Procedure of MUN
After the countries are assigned, delegates are given a study guide and they are expected to study and learn about their country or their figure. They are also expected to have an idea (based on the country) about the matters their committee is standing on. The conference is started with the opening speeches of the ambassadors and the secretary general. After this event the delegates are expected to communicate with each other and write resolution papers about the matter their committee is handling. After the chair approves the resolution papers it goes to the voting procedure. Meanwhile these developments delegates should stand up and make speeches about their country’s views on the topic.
•Social and Academic Aspects of MUN
MUN helps bring a new perspective on social and political topics. Besides the new perspective MUN is meant to foster negotiation, speaking and communication skills. It helps promote self confidence. Students also find a great environment to socialize, meet new people and make new friends. MUN improves foreign language skills and the feature of self expression. This experience will help in university life and finding a job. The certificate the students get will be valuable lifelong.
MUN is more important now than ever in an environment where student are not expected to think about political and social problems. We think MUN is one of the most efficient ways for self improvement, socializing and having fun.
Our MUN, The CoCoMUN’20 will take place at Kartepe Park Hotel in Kocaeli, on April 9-10-11, 2020.
